The company is the first in the UK to qualify under the revised IRIS criteria.

Milton Kirby to Serve on Georgia Board

The GMSDC is a non-profit organization established in 1975 as a regional office of the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC). As one of the largest of 39 Councils nationwide with the largest number of certified and ethnically mixed MBEs in the Southeast region, the GMSDC is comprised of a network of corporate members and certified minority business enterprises.
The mission of the GMSDC is to foster and expand mutually beneficial economic opportunities between MBEs, corporations, and government entities within the state of Georgia; and to help build a stronger, more equitable society by supporting and promoting minority business development.
For thirty-five years the GMSDC has served as a credible, one-stop source for identifying and accessing qualified minority suppliers. For minority entrepreneurs the council represents opportunities to enhance the business and competitive infrastructure while providing increase exposure to significant business prospects.
Kirby, president and CEO of Allied Logistics, Inc., was officially introduced as a board member at the GMSDC’s Annual Meeting on January 13, 2010. The appointment is for a two year term.
I am indeed honored and humbled to serve on the board of the GMSDC. The GMSDC was selected as Council of the Year in October at the NMSDC 2009 Conference and Business Opportunity Fair. The prestigious Council of The Year recognition symbolizes and provides evidence of the vital role the GMSDC has played continues to play in the development of MBEs in Georgia, said Kirby.
As an MBE representative on the board, I recognize the challenge and accept the responsibility to vigorously advocate the needs and wishes of my fellow MBEs, said Kirby.

SmarTek Systems shipped 136 of its SAS-1 Passive Acoustic Highway Traffic Sensors to be used by New York State’s Hudson Valley Transportation Management Center (HVTMC). The HVTMC is using the sensors to provide additional information to travelers on the parkways and highways under its purview. These improvements are designed to enhance motorist safety while helping to reduce traffic congestion and its environmental impact.
The Hudson Valley Transportation Management Center gathers and distributes traffic data for highways in Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, Orange, Columbia, and Ulster counties in New York State. The current projects are to install CCTV cameras and traffic monitoring sensors along the Hutchison River Parkway, the Cross County Parkway, the Sprain Brook Parkway, and the Saw Mill River Parkway to improve traffic monitoring equipment in the region. The sensors and systems will give the HVTMC more information regarding current traffic conditions. In turn, the HVTMC will better provide assistance and information to the traveling public on routes to use to avoid congestion.
Due to the rocky terrain and extensive monitoring area, cellular modems are being deployed for traffic data collection. Most sites are designed to be solar powered. The SAS-1’s low power requirements for multilane monitoring ensures that reliable solar powered data collection can be provided in all temperature extremes and weather conditions prevalent in the Hudson Valley. Texting While Driving Creates Challenges For Law Enforcement

Feb 18, 2010 – According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly 6,000 people died in crashes involving distracted driving in 2008. That’s why the federal government is ramping up an educational campaign against "distracted driving," reinforced by an array of new state laws against texting or talking on a cell phone while driving. Some penalize the behavior; others even criminalize it.
The measures come as insurers have begun seeking ways to avoid shouldering massive liability for inattentive customers. And the families of those killed or injured have begun organizing highly visible, sometimes wrenching campaigns to battle the perception that cell phone use is a harmless part of a driver's daily routine.
16% of all traffic fatalities were caused by distracted driving. In addition, 500,000 were injured in 2008 in accidents involving some form of driver distraction, the U.S. Department of Transportation reports.
Cell phone use affects a driver's reactions as much as having a blood-alcohol level of 0.08% -- the legal threshold for driving while intoxicated -- a University of Utah study has indicated.
Despite the potential dangers, more than two-thirds of people in a 2009 AAA survey admitted talking on a cell phone while driving.
Local jurisdictions in many states, including North Carolina, have introduced laws clamping down on distracted drivers. In all but six states, local jurisdictions can pass additional restrictions.
Nineteen states and the District of Columbia have banned texting while driving outright or have enacted limited texting bans.
Novice drivers are banned from texting in nine states.
Six states and the District of Columbia have banned handheld cell phones for all drivers.
The use of all cell phones, handheld or otherwise, by novice drivers is restricted in 21 states and the District of Columbia.
The use of all cell phones while driving a school bus with passengers is prohibited in 17 states and the District of Columbia.
On Tuesday, a federal law went into effect prohibiting commercial bus and truck drivers from texting while driving. The measure carries penalties of up to $2,750.
The consequences of breaking cell phone driving laws vary by state. In five states, drivers can be pulled over for using a cell phone illegally without first committing another offense, such as speeding. Texting while driving is a primary offense in 17 states.
In Missouri, for example, sending messages while driving is a primary offense for drivers under 21. Offenders can be fined up to $200 and get two points against their licenses.
In New York or Connecticut, you can get pulled over and ticketed just for holding your phone while driving.
There have been cases with more extreme consequences. A Seattle man was recently sentenced to five years in prison for vehicular homicide because he was texting while driving when he hit and killed a bicyclist. According to The Seattle Times, the prosecutor used phone records to prove the accident occurred while the driver was sending a text.
Distracted-driving laws may exist, but enforcing them is problematic. Unlike speeding -- a violation police can catch with a radar gun -- it's not always easy for officers to see whether drivers are using their cell phones, especially if a driver is texting with the device in his lap.
Since Missouri's law went into effect in August 2009, the Missouri Highway Patrol had issued just 13 tickets for young drivers caught texting, resulting in eight convictions, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported recently. A patrol spokesman says he thinks many warnings have also been issued. When a new traffic law is introduced, enforcement officials often work toward building public awareness before handing out tickets.
Texting and talking while driving are also problems among teenage drivers, research shows. A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration study found that 8 percent of drivers aged 16 to 24 were observed talking on a cell phone, compared to 6 percent of 25- to 69-year-olds and 1 percent of drivers over 70. And new drivers are inherently susceptible to accidents; accident rates are highest among 16-year-old drivers.
But not all teenage drivers comply with bans, and they can be difficult to enforce. An Insurance Institute for Highway safety study of North Carolina teenagers found that the percentage of teen drivers using cell phones increased after a ban went into place, even though two-thirds of teenagers surveyed said they were aware of the law.Some corporations prohibit texting while driving. Comcast, Sprint and Winston-Salem, NC based car dealership Frank Myers Auto Maxx all ban the practice among working employees.
Tracy Myers, owner of Frank Myers Auto said, "The use of cell phones and texting creates distractions for all drivers especially those that are inexperienced drivers. A teen can create and send a text message in 10 to 15 seconds. Driving 60 mph covers more than 80 feet per second. One text could equal a tenth of a mile that a driver is not paying attention to their driving. Our goal is to increase the awareness of how dangerous and serious this problem is."

Auriga Systems partners worldwide PDA giant HTC to offer new in-car options for taxis

Richmond’s Railroad History Told Through Photographs

Jan 15, 2010 – The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s Images of Rail series is Richmond Railroads by local author Jeff Hawkins. The book boasts more than 200 vintage photographs, documenting the past 60 years of railroading in the Capital City.
During the second half of the 20th century, the railroads that operated in the Mid-Atlantic region offered a wide variety of subject matter for railroad enthusiasts and photographers to marvel at. A prime location to witness this activity was in Richmond—a railroad melting pot.
As with any major city, the railroads played a significant role in Richmond’s growth and development. As a result of being served by five different railroads, a labyrinth of railroad infrastructure emerged, including the Triple Crossing, a world-renowned landmark. Millions of travelers have passed through Broad Street and Main Street Stations on famous streamliner passenger trains such as the Silver Meteor and the George Washington.
The author hopes the book will be “an introduction to those who have a thirst for knowledge and history, and want to learn more about the city and the railroads that helped shape it.”

Jan 15, 2010 – The Chinese automotive industry continues to battle against the global slowdown, registering its fifth consecutive month of sales growth in April. Moreover, sales of 1.15mn units broke the previous record of 1.1mn units set in March. BMI highlights the converging of the Chinese and US markets as the record figures keep China just ahead in terms of monthly sales. Moreover, sales for 4M09 stand at 3.478mn units compared with 3.023mn units for all light vehicles sold in the US. The market is in line with BMI's forecast for growth of around 6% in 2009. We are currently forecasting average annual growth of 8% for the next three years, with a return to double-digits in 2011. While the government's stimulus plan and scrappage scheme are helping the industry's immediate future, progress in new technology is helping to ensure the industry's longer-term stability. Domestic manufacturers are playing a prominent role in the move towards alternative fuels, while BYD Auto is now in talks to supply powertrain systems to US and European carmakers. Nissan Motor, meanwhile, is the first international carmaker to sign an agreement with the Chinese government, which will include sharing its expertise in developing electric vehicles (EVs) as well as setting up a battery recharging network. The group is also bringing forward its nationwide launch of EVs to 2011. China's attractiveness to international manufacturers is reflected in its pole position in BMI's Business Environment Ratings for the autos industry in the Asia Pacific. The market's highest scores are still for its Production and Sales Growth Potential, based on BMI's forecasts, taking its final rating to 66.5 out of a possible 100. However, even though a low level of vehicle ownership can look tempting in terms of possible growth, the low score for Country Structure (caused by the large gap that exists between wealthy towns and poorer rural areas) acts as a clear restriction on potential penetration. In terms of China's Macroeconomic Environment, a healthy long-term political and economic outlook ensures strong scores for the country's Risks to Realisation of Returns. Although the two Volkswagen (VW) joint ventures (JVs), Shanghai VW and FAW-VW, led the passenger car market in Q109 with sales of 134,000 and 131,100 units, respectively, US rival General Motors (GM) is upbeat about its potential in the country. The US firm now expects the market to expand by 5-10% rather than its original projection of less than 3%. GM Asia Pacific's president, Nick Reilly, expects his company to likewise achieve higher growth than the market by around three percentage points (pps). Fellow US carmaker Ford Motor also expects to outperform the market after launching its new Fiesta to coincide with new tax break for small cars.

Zodiac Launches Its Fastest Ever Nine Metre Rib

Jan 11, 2010 – The Zodiac Hurricane 940 MACH II (Military Air Channelled Hull II) is the newest addition to the company’s successful MACH II series and it is expected to attract considerable interest from potential customers in the military and civil security markets. The new RIB’s exceptional speed and performance arises from Zodiac’s unique patented MACH II deep-V hull design. The air channelled aluminium hull reduces water resistance while its deep V configuration combines with it to provide a low centre of gravity. These features result in increased speed and directional stability together with greater manoeuverability and improved fuel economy.
The ZH940 MACH II operates comfortably in all sea conditions and applications and it is available in a variety of outboard engine configurations. When used with twin 350 hp engines the new RIB can maintain its top speed over 50 knots for an estimated 146 nautical miles. The RIB’s design and manufacturing quality make it capable of withstanding sustained use in extreme conditions while the fully enclosed cabin and shock mitigation seating ensure optimum comfort for its crew. Further options with inboard engines and a GRP hull are currently under development.
The new boat is intended for hard daily usage and is available in a range of seating and accommodation configurations that can be adapted to the specialised needs of military and civil applications. It follows the Zodiac MILPRO design policy of rugged construction combined with the reliable performance and easy maintenance demanded by military and professional civil users. All Zodiac Hurricane models have removable collars for ease of maintenance, transport and storage. The standard collars are made from heavy-duty neoprene Hypalon fabric or PU polyurethane and include the option of Zodiac’s special intercommunicating valves. The boats also provide the capability of the inflatable collars being exchanged for an even more rugged Durarib ™ foam-filled collar if the need arises.
Zodiac Military and Professional (MILPRO). is part of the Zodiac Marine & Pool Group which operates in three sectors that provide a comprehensive service to their specialised markets. The Zodiac Military and Professional (MILPRO) sector supplies inflatable and semi-rigid craft for professional users such as police, coast guard, special forces, anti-terrorism units, fire teams, the offshore industry and other military users. The boats it manufactures range from 4. 7m to 12m long and are available in configurations that include inflatable and rigid inflatable boats with aluminium or fibreglass hull designs, inflatable or foam tubes, diesel inboard or petrol outboard engines. 10. Ponte Vecchio (Italy): Oldest and Most Famous of its kind

Completed in 1894 and designed by Horace Jones and Wolfe Barry, Tower Bridge (so named after the two, striking, 141-ft high towers and the Tower of London close to it) is one of the most famous landmarks in London and one of the most beautiful in the world. The 800-ft long bridge has a 28-ft clearance when closed but raises in the centre to a maximum clearance of 140-ft that allows ships to pass down the Thames. The Wind and Rain Bridge is the symbolized architecture of the Dong minority people. The wind and rain bridge in Diping is the largest of its kind in Guizhou Province, where China’s biggest Dong community lives. The bridge is over 50 meters long and it was first built in 1894 during the Qing Dynasty over 100 years ago. However, the original structure was destroyed in a big fire in 1959 and the one visitors see today was a recreation finished in 1964.

Its design is unique in that the 2 curved decks of the bridge cross each other through its X-shaped supporting tower.
5. Rolling Bridge (UK): The Bridge that Curls Up on Itself
Designed by Heatherwick Studio, the award-winning Rolling Bridge is located Paddington Basin, London. Rather than a conventional opening bridge mechanism, consisting of a single rigid element that lifts to let boats pass, the Rolling Bridge gets out of the way by curling up until its two ends touch. While in its horizontal position, the bridge is a normal, inconspicuous steel and timber footbridge; fully open, it forms a circle on one bank of the water that bears little resemblance to its former self.
Twelve metres long, the bridge is made in eight steel and timber sections, and is made to curl by hydraulic rams set into the handrail between each section.

During that time they sank 70,000 tonnes of concrete into 2 huge piers, lowered 2 counterbalanced bascules into place each weighing 1,000 tonnes and then clad the whole bridge in Portland stone and Cornish granite to disguise the 11,000 tonnes of steel beneath.
